Spend this weekend dancing the night away, enjoying musicals or learning some sexy moves to surprise your significant other
Toronto (Canada) is always full of events and things to do, and it doesn’t come up short this Valentine's season. There are shows, dances, musicals and lessons that couples, singles, friends, and even families will like. Below is a list of events for dance lovers around town.
The Shows
- A favourite love story, Dirty Dancing, the movie-turned-musical, is on at the Royal Alexandra Theatre all through the season. Get tickets for a date or to watch with the whole family.
- If you love disco, you probably love ABBA! Abbamania will be playing at Roy Thomson Hall this February 15. This all-Canadian musical will be performing ABBA’s famous hits like "Voulez-Vous", "Take a Chance", "Mamma Mia" and more.
- Another musical playing this season is the Tony Award-winning The Rink, about the lives of a skating rink owner and her daughter. It will be showing in the Fairview Library Theatre from February 13 onward.
- Dancemakers Centre for Creation presents Spoken Word, a presentation on contemporary dance by Canadian choreographers in the Distillery District, starting February 14.
- The Harbourfront neighbourhood also has events going on; for an Indian dance treat, watch Menakka Thakkar dance company performing all weekend, starting Friday. The show includes a Valentine's piece called Love’s Folly. If there’s time to spare, don’t forget there’s also the ice skating rink outside Harbourfront Centre, where you can skate the night away.
Dance Lessons
- You can swing your way with your partner or choose one on the dance floor at Dovercourt House on February 16. Swing Toronto is holding an event for couples and singles, with beginner dance lessons starting at 7 p.m., to get ready for the live band at 9.
- The best is yet to come! Sign up your guy for Striptease for Men! on Saturday February 16. He can learn some erotic moves to take home to you. It's presented by Superfly dance fitness, and they will also be holding classes to teach the ladies some sexy moves.
- For the gals that have been eyeing those pole-dancing lessons, Aradia Fitness is having a great girls' Valentine's Day at their studio on February 13. The tickets are only $5, and include spa gifts, pole dancing workshops and more.
- To celebrate Black History Month and Valentine's, what better way than by learning to move to the sensual Caribbean beats? On February 16, the Laura Furtado workshops with Ayanna will teach soca, calypso, souk and ragaetton in downtown Toronto.
Latin Hot Spots
Here is a roundup of some of the Latin events going on around town this Valentine's Day, with dance lessons included in the menu!
- Dance District is holding a Valentine's Day dance with salsa lessons at the Distillery District; it includes dinner, dessert, salsa and bachata lessons.
- Plaza Flamingo on College Street is also celebrating on February 14 with a special prix-fixe three-course dinner, flamenco dance show and salsa dance lessons on the second floor. It all starts at 7 p.m. this Thursday, so hurry up and get your tickets!
- Across the street from Plaza Flamingo is another Latin bar, El Rancho. They are also celebrating Valentine's with a dinner and dance event.
- Around St. Clair you can enjoy the Latin beats at Motivos this Valentine's with DJ Salsero. You can dance to bachata, merengue and salsa.
- Babalúu in Yorkville is also having a dinner and dance celebration on February 14, with a special couple’s menu along with dance lessons and great Latin music.
- Last but not least, for a romantic evening, trendy Lula Lounge is presenting the sultry voice of Latin jazz singer Amanda Martinez.
